UB researchers study cost of structural fires

The total cost of structural fires in the United States in 2014 was $328.5 billion.

Jun Zhuang, associate professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and an advisory board member for the Center for Geohazards Studies, says $273.1 billion, or 83 percent, of the cost can be traced to outfitting new buildings with fire prevention systems, operating fire departments, fire insurance and other expenditures.

That’s according to a new report written by UB engineers and issued by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
